Peer Mentorship: Elevating Heat Pump Installation Standards – Our Insights

BPM are passionate about the growth of the renewables sector and, crucially, the quality of installations that underpin consumer confidence. Recently, our Director, Chris Kille, and Operations Manager, Peter Guerrini, had the valuable opportunity to provide feedback on the design of a new peer mentorship program by Nesta (the UK’s innovation agency for social good). This exciting initiative aims to support recently trained heat pump installers as they navigate their first few real-world installations.

The transition from classroom training to the complexities of on-site work can be daunting. While foundational knowledge is essential, the nuances of system design, customer interaction, and troubleshooting often come with experience. This is where peer mentorship promises to be a game-changer.

Why Mentorship Matters: Perspectives from the Field

During the discussion, Peter Guerrini highlighted a critical point: “The system design is the key for the heat pump. The technology’s been around for years, but the system design is key.” He emphasised that while most competent plumbers could physically connect a heat pump, ensuring it “would work efficiently, that’s the thing. And that’s what will kill the industry if it’s not done right.”

The ability for new installers to “tap into a network of people that have already been there, done that, and could give some of their experience and knowledge… that to me would be invaluable,” Peter added. This sentiment underscores the desire for practical, experience-based guidance that goes beyond initial training.

Chris Kille echoed this, seeing mentorship as a way to “fast-track learning.” He pointed out the benefit of having an experienced guide to “ask a query or question… and hopefully get replies and have interaction on that,” something not easily replicated through online forums or videos alone. The value lies in “that experience… they’ve had the pitfalls and the good things that happened and the bad things.”

Key Benefits of a Mentorship Program for Installers:

Based on the insights from our team, a well-structured mentorship program could offer:

  • Quickly move theoretical knowledge into practice in real-world scenarios.
  • Gain confidence with expert backup during those crucial initial heat pump jobs.
  • Learn the critical art of designing efficient and effective systems from seasoned professionals.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the handover process and how to best educate the end-user, ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Become adept at anticipating and navigating common installation challenges.
  • Build valuable connections and access wider support networks within the industry.
  • Build a strong reputation for quality installs from the outset, which can help in attracting new customers.

Building a Successful Program: Important Considerations

For such a scheme to thrive, transparency and credibility are paramount. Chris noted, “If it was a charity… there’s a much more natural trust if people understand that.” The involvement of recognised bodies like MCS could also lend significant weight.

Other practicalities discussed included:

  • Ensuring mentors are genuinely experienced and capable.
  • How mentors are recognised for their time and expertise.
  • How the pairing works, communication channels, and the nature of support (on-site, remote).
  • Clear understanding of responsibilities during mentored installations.

A Rising Tide Lifts All Ships

Ultimately, as Peter put it, “a rising tide lifts all ships.” Investing in the skills and confidence of new installers benefits the entire heat pump industry. High-quality installations lead to satisfied customers, positive word-of-mouth, and greater adoption of this vital renewable technology.

BPM are enthusiastic about initiatives like this peer mentorship scheme. It aligns perfectly with our commitment to excellence in the renewables sector. We believe that fostering a supportive community where knowledge and experience are shared is crucial for building a strong, skilled workforce ready to meet the growing demand for heat pumps.
